ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the October 22/23  Bulletin)

Did you know that in the first half of the 20th century people consumed more nonrenewable resources than in all of humankind’s previous time on earth? Consider this week what non-renewable resources that you use. Are there any that could be reduced? I.e. Studies show up to 30% of the difference in miles per gallon is due to driving habits alone. We could save more than a ton of CO2 per year by accelerating slowly and smoothly, driving the speed limit, maintaining a steady speed and anticipating stops and starts.

NEW

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the October 29/30 Bulletin)

Treat the earth as if your life depends upon it. (Genesis 2:15) When purchasing food and other items, consider the well-known advise: Reduce-Reuse-Recycle. Look at how items are packed; buy in quantity or in bulk rather than individually wrapped when possible, since this reduces materials in manufacturing, creating less trash. Pack lunches in reusable containers rather than zip-lock bags.

BLUE MASS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

A Mass honoring the law enforcement personnel of the North Country will be celebrated on October 30, 2016 at 2:30 pm in St. Joseph’s Church, 306 West Main Street, Malone. Commonly referred to as the “Blue Mass,” it was thought important that such an event be held in northern New York to offer thanks to God for the dedication and sacrifice made by the women and men in law enforcement and to pray for their safety, as well as, for their families and communities. On this occasion, we hope to draw representation from various local agencies of law enforcement and the Department of Corrections to join in this special moment of prayer. Bishop LaValley would like to invite parishioners from throughout the Diocese of Ogdensburg to join him for this inaugural event. For further information please contact: Fr. Shane Lynch, Chaplain Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Watertown Police Department FBI Albany 315-287-0114 frshane@icloud.com

MONASTIC EXPERIENCE WEEKEND: for Single Men, 18-40 Years Old

St. Mary's Monastery, a contemplative monastery of Benedictine monks set in a forested area in Petersham, MA, is offering a Monastic Experience Weekend for young Catholic men aged 18 - 40 from November 4 – 6, 2016. Men will participate in the monks’ daily balance of prayer, work and study, and will have the opportunity to speak with those who have been called to this vocation. Spending these days with the monks and sharing their life will allow those who might feel called to the contemplative way of life – a life radically centered on Christ – to see what Benedictine life and living in a monastery is like.
If you know of any young men who may be interested in coming to this, please share with them the news of our weekend. The link to our flyer is on the homepage of our website at: www.stmarysmonastery.org. Simply click on
NEWS & EVENTS and the flyer will appear. As St Benedict says in our rule: “What, dear brother, is more delightful than this voice of the Lord calling to us?” Thank you for helping others to hear His voice.  For more information contact Fr. Gregory monks@stmarysmonastery.org or at 978-724-3350
