SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR HURRICANE MATTHEW RELIEF AND RECOVERY
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops requested all dioceses conduct a special collection for disaster recovery in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. On behalf of Bishop LaValley, please extend the opportunity for parishioners to assist the Church of the Caribbean and United States. We will not schedule a second collection. Pastors are asked to share the announcement below in the bulletin and, if possible, from the pulpit when it best fits the parish calendar in the next few weeks.
BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT:
Hurricane Matthew punished Haiti, other Caribbean islands and the coast of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas in late September and early October. It set local rainfall records and Atlantic basin records for duration. Haiti suffered catastrophic damage on the scale of their 2010 earthquake. Humanitarian aid to 1.4 million people in urban and rural areas is still needed. We ask you and your family to pray for the victims of the storm and to consider a second gift in the collection next week. Catholic Charities will use donations marked for Hurricane Matthew Relief to aid the people of Haiti and other areas needing long term recovery support.
Parishes should record and deposit any donations, then send a single check to Catholic Charities marked for Hurricane Matthew relief.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS
Our aging religious need your help. Thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests in the U.S. spent years working in Catholic schools, religious education, colleges, hospitals and social services agencies – often for little compensation. Their sacrifices leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Many of these religious worked in our own Diocese. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide nursing care and more to our retired religious sisters and brothers. A second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious will be taken up on the weekend of December 10th and 11th. Please give to those who have given a lifetime

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
(for the December 3/4 Bulletin)
“Awake from your sleep.” Romans 13:11 Did you know that the fourth new Beatitude given to us by Pope Francis on All Saints Day is: “Blessed are those who protect and care for our common home?” Consider some ways that you and your family might embody this Beatitude in your preparations for Christmas this year. A very practical resolution is: make your shopping list reflect this new Beatitude.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
(for the December 10/11 Bulletin)
“A child will lead them.” Did you know that recently 21 children, ages 9-19, sued the government and fossil fuel industries for endangering their future by not protecting them from carbon emissions? These children don’t seem to be looking for ‘more stuff,’ but for the assurance of clean air, fresh water and a beautiful home for their future and their families. One way for making this desire come true not only for them but for all children in the world would be lower carbon emission by conserving gasoline, i. e., carpool, combine errands, shop locally.

EMPTY MANGER CAROLING: Christmas Caroling
Every year the Pro-Lifers in Plattsburgh, NY bring the joy and hope of Christmas to the darkness of the abortuary with our “Empty Manger” Christmas Caroling day. During an “Empty Manger” Christmas Caroling Day, pro- lifers gather Around an empty manger to sing Christmas Carols at abortion facilities. The purpose of the event is to bring the joy and hope of Christmas to these places of misery and despair. Children have been saved from abortion when their mothers heard the carols and reconsidered their choice for abortion in light of the Christmas story. The empty manger is a dual symbol. Like the empty manger lovingly placed in every Christmas crèche in anticipation of celebrating the Nativity of Jesus Christ, it represents the joy that ought to accompany the birth of every child.
This year there will be 2 opportunities to raise your voices in joyful song at our Empty Manger Caroling in front of Planned Parenthood of the North Country, 66 Brinkerhoff Street, Plattsburgh.
So mark your calender for Friday, December 9th and Saturday, December 17th both beginning at 10am- 2pm Come anytime and stay as long as you wish. Children welcome too!
