SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR HURRICANE MATTHEW RELIEF AND RECOVERY

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops requested all dioceses conduct a special collection for disaster recovery in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. On behalf of Bishop LaValley, please extend the opportunity for parishioners to assist the Church of the Caribbean and United States. We will not schedule a second collection. Pastors are asked to share the announcement below in the bulletin and, if possible, from the pulpit when it best fits the parish calendar in the next few weeks.

BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT:

Hurricane Matthew punished Haiti, other Caribbean islands and the coast of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas in late September and early October. It set local rainfall records and Atlantic basin records for duration. Haiti suffered catastrophic damage on the scale of their 2010 earthquake. Humanitarian aid to 1.4 million people in urban and rural areas is still needed. We ask you and your family to pray for the victims of the storm and to consider a second gift in the collection next week. Catholic Charities will use donations marked for Hurricane Matthew Relief to aid the people of Haiti and other areas needing long term recovery support.

Parishes should record and deposit any donations, then send a single check to Catholic Charities marked for Hurricane Matthew relief.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the November 19/20 Bulletin)

Did you see on TV recently the National Geographic program entitled BEFORE THE FLOOD? If not, you can view it on YouTube. Sound like Noah and the flood? Well, it’s not about that flood but rather it speaks about our own future. It is a documentary on the scientific research concerning the rising sea levels and its impact on ALL life on the planet, especially those who lack resources to cope and the natural world. Included in the presentation is praise for Pope Francis and his timely encyclical Laudato Si. It sheds light on these facts from a faith perspective and calls to act. The encyclical is available on line through USCCB.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the November 26/27 Bulletin)

What is your water footprint? Each of us uses water at home for cooking, bathing, laundry. But did you know that 95 % of fresh water we use every day is invisible? It is hidden inside the things we wear, eat, use and consume? Depending upon what we eat and our lifestyle, we can have a larger or smaller water footprint. And where is this water footprint? It’s all around the world, linking us to rivers and aquifers, communities, plants and animals far from our homes. To check out your “water footprint” go to http://waterfootprint.org/en/water-footprint Product water footprint Every product has a water footprint and that water footprint lands in one or more places in the world. The size of the water footprint lets us know how much of our limited water resources that product has claimed and whether it could be made more efficiently. Is the product’s water footprint sustainable? Let's check the local context in which it lands and we can tell you.

Business water footprint
While the price of water is rarely a driving force, many companies are awakening to the fact that their business is reliant on water, in their operations or their supply chain. The water footprint can help all producers learn about their water dependence and plot a course for addressing water-related business risks.
National water footprint
The water footprint isn’t only for products and companies, it also tells us how much water is being consumed or polluted in a river basin, a region or a country. As goods are traded between countries, imported and exported, the water footprint follows in the form of virtual water. For a country to secure water, food, energy and international relations, it needs to consider how it is using its own water and the water of other countries to provide goods and services to its citizens.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS

Our aging religious need your help. Thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests in the U.S. spent years working in Catholic schools, religious education, colleges, hospitals and social services agencies – often for little compensation. Their sacrifices leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Many of these religious worked in our own Diocese. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide nursing care and more to our retired religious sisters and brothers. A second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious will be taken up on the weekend of December 10th and 11th. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.
