Diocese of Ogdensburg

The Roman Catholic Church in Northern New York

The Mathematics Program of the  schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg is based on the National Common Core  Standards.  As with all of our  educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith  foundation.  In grade two mathematics,  the focus is 1) extending understanding of base ten notation; 2) building  fluency with addition and subtraction; 3) using standard units of measure; 4) describing  and analyzing shapes.

In the context of all  mathematical instruction, students are expected to use basic mathematical  practices which include:

  • making sense of problems and  persevere in solving them
  • reason abstractly and quantitatively
  • construct viable arguments and  critique the reasoning of others
  • make models using mathematics
  • use appropriate mathematical  tools strategically
  • attend to precision
  • look for and make use of  structure (patterns)
  • look for repeated reasoning

The  content of grade two is centered around the following Common Core domains and  standards: Operations & Algebraic Thinking

  • represent  and solve problems involving addition and subtraction within 100
  • add and  subtract within 20 fluently
  • work with  equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication

Number & Operations in Base Ten

  • understand  place value to three digits
  • use place  value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract

Measurement and Data

  • measure and estimate lengths in standard units
  • relate addition and subtraction to length
  • work with time and money
  • represent and interpret data

  • reason with shapes and their attributes
  • partition circles  and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using  the words (halves, thirds, half of, a  third of, etc.)
