The Roman Catholic Church in Northern New York

The English Language Arts Program of the schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg is based on the National Common Core Standards.  As with all of our educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith foundation.   Consistent with the Common Core/New York State Standards, pre-kindergarten students are expected to develop the following skills in each of the English/Language Arts areas.

Reading – Literature

  • with prompting and support, ask and answer question on a text about details and characters and be able to retell a story
  • can tell the role of author and illustrator as well as learn new vocabulary and interact with storybooks, poems, etc.
  • with support, will compare and contrast two stories
  • make connections between stories and the world around them

Reading – Non Fiction

  • with prompting and support, ask and answer questions about details and describe connections between pieces of information
  • identify the front and back cover and display correct orientation of the book and turning of pages
  • with support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text
  • identify similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic

Reading – Foundational Skills

  • demonstrates understanding the basic features of print
  • follows left to right, top to bottom, page to page
  • understands that words are separated by spaces in print
  • recognizes and names some upper and lower case letters, especially those in his/her own name
  • differentiates between letters and numbers
  • demonstrates an emerging understanding of spoken words, syllables and sounds
  • demonstrates an awareness of the relationship between letters and sounds and can pronounce initial sounds
  • recognizes own name and signs and labels in the environment

Writing

  • with a combination of drawing, dictating, or writing, express an opinion, share information or describe an event
  • with guidance, respond to questions and add detail to strengthen drawings or writing
  • participate in shared reading and writing

Speaking and Listening

  • with guidance and support, participate in group conversations and follow agreed upon rules
  • ask questions to seek help or get information
  • describe familiar people, places, or events
  • demonstrate an emergent ability to express thoughts, feelings and ideas
