Catechist Certification Program

Purpose

The Growth in Faith Program offers the theological and methodological formation necessary to achieve diocesan catechist certification.

Who Needs To Be Certified?

1. PARISH CATECHISTS

2. FULL-TIME CATHOLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS

      • Catholic and non-Catholic (including music, art and physical education instructors).
      • Part-time teachers (less than ½) at the discretion of the principal.
      • New teacher’s certification begins with the new teacher orientation in August/September with two follow-up sessions in the fall and spring of the year hired.
      • Teachers hired after the new teacher orientation, participate in this session the following year. Participation in the follow-up fall and spring session is determined by the date of hire.
      • The certification process should be completed as soon as possible. (Minimally one course per year must be completed.)
            Credit from college may be applied toward GIF Certification.

CATECHIST CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION (21 HOURS)

Is awarded after the completion of Spirtuality of the Catechist (I,II,III) and two electives for a total of five courses.

CATECHIST CERTICATE (51 HOURS)

Is awarded when all courses are completed.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UPON COMPLETION OF CERTIFICATION

Formation is a Lifelong Process

Certified Catechetical Leaders, Catechists, Catholic School Teachers are required to complete 3 hoursper year in pre-approved faith formation courses and/or attendance at;

    • Celebrate Christ
    • Journey with Christ
    • Faculty Retreat Days (Catholic School Teachers)
    • National Catechetical Conferences
    • Diocesan and Regional CORE gatherings
    • Parish Missions or Programs

CATECHETICAL LEADER CERTIFICATON QUALIFICATIONS

Level One

  • Must be a Certified Catechist
  • Completion of the Growth in Faith Catechist Certification Program
  • Completion of the 4 Catechetical Leader Workshops in the Formation for Ministry Program.
  • Membership and participation in Regional CORE.

Level Two

  • Must be a Certified Catechist
  • Completion of the Diocesan Formation for Ministry Program with an emphasis on training as a Catechetical Leader including the 4 Catechetical Leader workshops.
  • Completion of the courses in Methods & Learner in the Growth in Faith Program.
  • Membership and participation in Regional CORE.

Level Three

  • Must be a Certified Catechist.
  • Bachelor’s Degree/Master’s Degree in Religious Studies or related field.
  • Or National Certification
  • The completion of the Collaborative Ministry Course offered in the Diocesan Formation for Ministry Program. (if needed)
  • Membership and participation in Regional CORE.

Please Note: Having completed Formation for Ministry shortens this process since all course in this program are equivalent to GIF Certification.

The three regional offices schedule all the GIF courses throughout the year. A fall and spring schedule is sent to all parish Catechetical Leaders. If you would like to schedule a specific course for your parish catechists, please contact any of the Assistant Regional Directors listed below.
